A Song For the Sabbath

by

John Henry Wheeler

It's good to give thanks to the Lord,
To sing praise to your name, 0 Most High;
To tell in the morning your mercy,
Your faithfulness night after night;
On the strings of the psaltery and harp,
To the gentle voice of the lyre;
For you, 0 Lord, make me glad by your work;
I'll sing of the deeds of your hands.
0 Lord, how great are your deeds;
How deep are the thoughts of your mind!
For all of creation's wonderful gifts,
It's good to give thanks to the Lord.

The fool and the sinner do not understand:
Though the wicked prosper and grow,
Both they and their works will be burned in the end,
While the Lord endures evermore.
When the Lord's enemies are scattered and slain,
My God will lift me on high;
Anointed with oil, I'll flourish and grow
Like a tree in the house of the Lord.

It's good to give thanks to the Lord,
(Tov lehodot ladonay,)
To sing praise to your name, 0 Most High;
(Ulzammer leshimkha, Elyon;)
To tell in the morning your mercy,
(Lehaggid baboker hasdekha,)
Your faithfulness night after night;
(Ve'emunatkha balleylot:)
On the strings of the psaltery and harp,
(Aley asor va'aley navel,)
To the gentle voice of the lyre;
(Aley higgayon bekhinnor.)
For you, 0 Lord, make me glad by your work;
I'll sing of the deeds of your hands.
0 Lord, how great are your deeds;
How deep are the thoughts of your mind!
For all of creation's wonderful gifts,
It's good to give thanks to the Lord;
It's good to give thanks…to the Lord.

[With C&W feeling:]
It's good to give thanks to the Lord,
To sing praise to your name, 0 Most High;
To tell in the morning your mercy,
Your faithfulness night after night;
On the strings of the psaltery and harp,
To the gentle voice of the lyre;
For all of creation's wonderful gifts,
It's good to give thanks to the Lord.
It's good to give thanks to the Lord;
It's good to give thanks to the Lord!
